What is a preoperative evaluation?

A preoperative evaluation is a complete medical history and physical exam focusing on cardiac and pulmonary risk factors leading to surgical complications. The goal of a preoperative evaluation is to reduce a patient’s surgical and anesthetic risks and to help them return to healthy functioning after surgery as soon as possible.

What happens during a preoperative evaluation?

During your pre-operative exam, your provider will measure your height, weight, and vital signs. You should bring a list of medications, both over-the-counter and prescription, for the doctor to review. You may need to adjust your use of medications prior to surgery.

Doctors at AllCare Family Medicine and Urgent Care of Atlanta will evaluate your medical, surgical, and family medical history and perform a comprehensive physical exam. If necessary, your doctor will order additional laboratory testing which may include an electrocardiogram to test the heart functioning, blood or urine tests, and X-rays.

What are the risks of general anesthesia?

General anesthesia has been used in surgical procedures since 1842 as a method of keeping a patient comfortable, pain-free, and unconscious during surgery. Your preoperative evaluation will determine if you can safely be given general anesthesia during your surgery. While generally safe, general anesthesia for older adults or those undergoing lengthy procedures may present some health risks, including:

  • Confusion after surgery
  • Pneumonia
  • Stroke
  • Heart attack

What health conditions increase risks for patients undergoing general anesthesia?

During preoperative evaluation, AllCare Family Medicine and Urgent Care of Atlanta doctors will determine whether you are at an increased risk for health problems related to anesthesia. General anesthetic deaths occur very rarely, roughly one in every 100,000 to 200,000 cases. Some health conditions can increase the risks for patients undergoing general anesthesia, including:

  • History of anesthesia reactions
  • Existing heart, lung, or kidney conditions
  • Alcoholism
  • Obstructive sleep apnea
  • Seizures
  • Use of medications that increases the risk of bleeding
  • High blood pressure
  • Drug allergies
  • Obesity
  • Smoking
