What is an Annual Physical or Preventive Examination?

American Medical Associations defines these scope of services as “Comprehensive preventive medicine evaluation and management”.

More common names for such health examination services are Annual physical, Wellness Physical, Health examination, Annual check-up etc…

Who Needs An Annual Physical?

Absolutely everyone will benefit from this examination. Health examination contains custom tailored screening tests for different age groups and genders.

How Often Do I need A Wellness Physical?

Most insurers will cover this services for free at least once per year, hence the name “annual” check up.

How Much Does An Annual Wellness Check-up Cost?

Typically, insurers are covering these services at no charge to patients no more than once per year.

What Happens During Annual Physical?

Physician gathers your Health History, including:

  • Personal medical and surgical history
  • Family health history
  • Social history focusing on smoking and alcohol 
  • Behavioral health questionnaire when indicated

Physician will order general screening Blood Tests:

  • CBC WITH DIFFERENTIAL/PLATELET
  • COMP. METABOLIC PANEL
  • Thyroid Stimulating Hormone
  • HIV screening for at risk groups
  • Hepatitis C Screening for baby boomers

Breast Cancer Screening:

For Women age 50 or with family history doctor will order Screening Mammography for Early Detection of Breast Cancer.

Bone Strength Check:

For Women of age 60+ doctor will order Screening for osteoporosis with BONE DENSITY (Dexa scan)

Colon Cancer Screening:

Everyone age 50 and above will need Screening for malignant neoplasm of colon done by either:

  • Fecal Occult Blood (stool test every year) or
  • COLOGUARD (stool test every 3 years) or
  • Colonoscopy (Invasive camera test every 8-10years)

Screening for Cardiovascular Disease:

  • LIPID PANEL (Cholesterol profile)
  • ELECTROCARDIOGRAM (EKG)

Screening Smokers for Lung Cancer:

Low Dose CT scan of Chest will be ordered for anyone aged 55 to 74 years and currently smoke or have quit within the past 15 years.
